Many a young and enterprising commercial photographer sadly believe in the myth that there are best lenses for shooting certain kind of products. For example, many love to believe that there are best lenses for portrait photography and then there are perfect lenses for aerial photography. This article is about demystifying some of the myths and misconceptions that surround todays commercial photographer regarding their profession and the various nuances of this trade.
Visit any of the forums meant for photographers, especially commercial photographer, and you would find various posts contributing to the misconception that there are perfect lenses for different kind of products and styles of photography. For instance, if you visit a forum where a thread discusses the best lens for shooting food or edible items, you would find different posts feeding the delusion in different ways. But strangely all those posts which insist or advice on the right lens are highly misleading.
There is nothing such as the perfect lens for any kind of photography. Whether you shoot a particular subject or you work for a particular style like portraiture etc., you dont have to worry about the right lens for the best images. There is nothing such as the perfect lens. All that matters is the focus. Focus is decided with the message that the client wants to communicate. For example, the client wants to show the product only, so the focus will be completely on the subject. Here the commercial photographer would need a wide angle lens so that the subject gets emphasized. On the other hand, if the client wants to focus both on the subject as well as show a model enjoying the food, then the commercial photographer should use the telephoto lens which would be the best lens to work with. This should clear out a lot of confusion about the use of right lens with any object or subject.
