  • Are there any teachers in California to give me some advices?

I have a engineering degree, and ever worked in industry for several years before I went to PhD program. Originally I planed to find an engineer job again since I need to work authrization in USA (I came from Asian). Now I got my EAD card so that I can change my career. I think of teaching math or technology in California. I knew I need to pass the CBEST first, then what?

Should I go back school again for subject competence, or just past CSET? Any suggestions?

Then what kind of program is sutable for me concerning a teacher preparation program? Since I am not a native American, is there any special requirements for language?

  • Dear Amy,
In order to become a highly qualified teacher in California, you will need to enroll in a teacher credentialing program that can take anywhere from 1-2 years usually. Not knowing what part of California you are from, in the northern and southern part is Chapman University (it offers a night program only allowing you to work during the day), St. Mary's College in Moraga (Northern CA) and most of the California State Universities offer programs. Project Pipeline also offers a program, check with the school district of your choice to inquire about that. If you want to teach math (which is a great major because math teachers are in great demand and hard to find!) you will need to either take the required math courses in the single subject credentialing program (approx. 20 units will be needed) or pass the CSET (assuming that you have already passed the CBEST and have your B.A. or B.S. degree from an accrediated college which can be anywhere in the world.)

You will need to send for your official transcripts to enter the credentialing program and now pass the CBEST (basic reading, writing and math skills through grade 10) and CSET in your desired subject matter or have subject matter competency by taking the required course work that can be done at a local Community College. There are a lot of hurdles and hoops to jump through to finally become credentialed in California. You can always start out by first taking the tests, enroll in a program and then substitute teach in a district at either a high school or middle school level to gain more experience in a classroom for any single subject which is grades 7 and up. You can also substitute teach at any district once you pass the CBEST, most districts are in great need for substitute teachers. Try that first to see if you like it, then enroll in a program, that is another option you have. You won't get rich substituting but you can try it to see if you like teaching. You will need to register for the CBEST either through the CSET web site or through a school district, pay the fees, show up at the test site and wait for your test results usually a month later. Good luck and if I can be of any other help, let me know.
